Candidates Reject Unfair 2027 Election Results

On August 24, 2026, at a political forum titled "Democracy & Governance: Beyond Limits," several Nigerian presidential candidates, including Peter Obi, Omoyele Sowore, and Atiku Abubakar, stated they would reject the results of the January 16, 2027 general election if the process was not free, fair, and credible. Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, was the first to respond to a question about accepting the election outcome, stating, "No, if it's not fair." Other candidates echoed similar sentiments, reflecting the growing tension surrounding Nigeria's electoral process.

The forum highlighted the candidates' positions on legitimacy and acceptance of the election results. Additionally, it was noted that many opposition candidates have yet to establish their campaign structures, while the All Progressives Congress has formed a 223-member presidential campaign body led by former governor Abdulaziz Yari.
