Ex-INEC Chairman Clarifies BVAS Offline Functionality Amid Network Concerns

Former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu has addressed concerns over the functionality of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), emphasizing its offline capabilities to perform voter accreditation without internet connectivity at polling units. Yakubu explained that while the BVAS does not require internet access during the election day, network coverage is needed for transmitting results electronically.

The clarification comes amidst debates on the credibility of electronic result transmission in Nigeria, with recent amendments to the Electoral Act allowing for electronic transmission facing criticism for potential loopholes that could compromise transparency. Opposition figures like Omoyele Sowore have protested against the changes, alleging that they could facilitate result manipulation.

The INEC has been working with telecommunication companies to improve network coverage in areas with poor connectivity to ensure smoother electoral processes.
