Canada Imposes 15-50% Tariffs on US Goods

Canada will implement new tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on a variety of goods imported from the United States, effective September 8. This decision follows US President Donald Trump's imposition of 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products.

Canadian officials stated that these retaliatory duties aim to match the US tariffs and will impact products including steel, dairy goods, electronics, and household appliances. Affected items also include fresh and frozen fish, dishwashers, washing machines, and railway construction materials.

The Canadian government has introduced a CA$7.5 billion support package for businesses and workers affected by the trade tensions. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne emphasized Canada's unity in facing this unprecedented challenge.

Industry Minister Melanie Joly urged support for local businesses and indicated that Canada would seek new trading partners to lessen reliance on the US. The escalating tariff dispute has led to heightened tensions between Trump and Canadian officials, including threats to increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles.
