Canadian PM Carney backs Andrew's removal from succession

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed support for the removal of former Prince Andrew from the royal line of succession, citing his deplorable behavior and ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct in public office. This statement was made during Carney's visit to Japan on a Saturday, where he held talks with his counterpart, Sana Takaichi.

Carney's comments follow the former prince's stripping of royal titles last year, which was linked to his connections with the late U.S. sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew has denied any wrongdoing, particularly in relation to Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she was trafficked by Epstein and had encounters with Andrew when she was 17.

In 2022, Andrew settled a civil lawsuit brought by Giuffre in the U.S. without admitting liability. Carney's remarks align with Australia and New Zealand's announcements supporting Andrew's removal from the line of succession, which requires agreement from the 14 Commonwealth realms where King Charles III is head of state.
