China Condemns UK Over Conviction of Ex-Hong Kong Cop

The Chinese government has denounced the United Kingdom following the conviction of former Hong Kong policeman Chung Biu Yuen for espionage. Yuen, aged 65, was found guilty by a London jury for assisting foreign intelligence services during a trial that lasted a week.

The Chinese Embassy issued a statement on Thursday, describing the verdict as a politically motivated decision that abuses legal processes and manipulates the judiciary. The statement accused the UK of seeking to embolden anti-China elements and destabilize Hong Kong, labeling the verdict as a smear against the Chinese government.

The embassy called for the UK to cease its so-called political manipulation and warned that China would take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its interests. The case also involved another individual, Peter Wai, who was implicated in conducting shadow police operations targeting pro-democracy protesters in exile.
