COAS Shaibu Urges Commanders to Uphold Human Rights

On October 10, 2026, Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army, delivered a lecture at the Army War College in Abuja, where he charged commanders to uphold fundamental human rights in their operations. He highlighted that respecting human rights is critical for operational success and national stability.

Shaibu explained that the command philosophy aims to advance and transform the Nigerian Army to adapt to evolving security challenges. He emphasized strict adherence to international humanitarian law and established protocols during operations to protect civilians and enhance public trust.

The COAS also encouraged a soldier-first concept, prioritizing the welfare of personnel, which is anchored in the Army's operational readiness strategy.
