COAS Advocates for Sustainable Veteran Welfare Policies

During a meeting at Army Headquarters in Abuja, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), emphasized the need for a sustainable policy framework to enhance the welfare support for military veterans. He highlighted the importance of developing a robust system that reflects the sacrifices made by soldiers who served in high-risk operations across the country.

Shaibu made this appeal while receiving Ms. Grace Morenik Henri, the chairperson of the National Council of Nigerian Legion.

He argued for the establishment of clear legislative guarantees for funding to strengthen and expand existing frameworks, ensuring that retired personnel can transition smoothly into civilian life. Henri pointed out the structural challenges faced by retired service members, including low public awareness of the Legion's role and the absence of a dedicated budget line for veteran affairs.

She advocated for a fully funded ministry dedicated exclusively to veteran affairs to ensure consistent support throughout the fiscal policy cycle.
