Community Collaboration Key to Flood Management in Lagos

Wale Ponnle, the Chief Operating Officer of Gracias Global Homes & Properties Ltd and chairman of the Strategy and Planning Committee of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), called for stronger collaboration between Lagos communities and government agencies to combat the city's ongoing flooding issues. Speaking to journalists in Lagos, Ponnle stated that the responsibility of addressing flooding should not rest solely with the government.

He urged community leaders to act as environmental watchdogs by reporting illegal constructions and activities that obstruct natural waterways. Ponnle praised Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, for their investments in drainage infrastructure and flood control projects.

He suggested implementing accessible reporting mechanisms, such as hotlines and mobile applications, to allow residents to report violations. Ponnle stressed the importance of public education and continuous awareness campaigns to empower residents in the fight against flooding.
