Nigerian Government Criticizes Eze Ndigbo Coronation Abroad

The Nigerian government, represented by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, condemned the recent coronation of Eze Ndigbo in foreign lands, describing the practice as embarrassing. This criticism follows violent protests in South Africa's Eastern Cape, where local residents reacted against the coronation of Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as Eze Ndigbo in East London.

The protests, which began on March 30, 2026, resulted in the destruction of vehicles and escalated tensions within the community. Ojukwu noted that similar unrest occurred in Ghana in July 2025, where a Nigerian delegation met with President John Mahama to address tensions.

The Nigerian government has urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to impose sanctions on individuals who violate traditional rulership titles outside Igboland, declaring that any titles conferred outside this region are not recognized by the Igbo people. The government aims to maintain safety for Nigerian citizens abroad and prevent xenophobic sentiments.
