Nigeria Bans Eze Ndigbo Titles Abroad Amid Concerns

The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the practice of coronating Eze Ndigbo leaders in foreign countries, asserting that it creates problems for Nigeria's international reputation. This statement was made by Dr. Magnus Eze, the Special Assistant on Communication to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during a meeting with the South East Council of Traditional Rulers in Enugu.

Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu raised concerns about the promotion of cultural events abroad that lead to the establishment of traditional leadership structures, which can cause unrest and conflict within communities. Following recent unrest in Eastern Cape, South Africa, where protests escalated into violence, the Nigerian government has begun diplomatic talks to manage the situation.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by Senator Azuta Mbata, has aligned with traditional rulers to ban the recognition of Eze Ndigbo titles outside Igbo land, stating that such titles will no longer be accepted by Nigerian embassies worldwide.
