Police Detain Officer After 7-Year-Old Injured in Uyo

On September 11, 2026, at approximately 9:30 PM, a seven-year-old boy was injured during a stop-and-search operation conducted by police personnel attached to the Quick Response Squad (QRS) along Abak Road, Uyo. The incident involved the discharge of a smoke pistol by one of the officers, resulting in an injury to the child's left hand.

Following the incident, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare, detained Inspector Monday Okonta, the officer allegedly involved, and ordered a thorough investigation. CP Azare visited the injured child in the hospital, where he assured the family that the investigation would be conducted professionally and transparently.

He emphasized the importance of conducting police duties with professionalism and respect for public safety. Azare warned against any misconduct by police personnel and assured that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary action.

He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with police operations.
