Customs Service Partners with Beiersdorf to Combat Counterfeits

The Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, addressed the issue of intellectual property rights infringement during the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Beiersdorf Nigeria, the manufacturer of Nivea products, in Abuja over the weekend. Adeniyi, represented by Deputy Comptroller-General Timi Bomodi, highlighted the significant challenges posed by counterfeit products, which criminals exploit to capitalize on popular brands, risking public health.

The partnership aims to strengthen enforcement capabilities and support legitimate trade, which is expected to positively impact the economy through tax revenue and job creation. Oladel Adeypl, representing Beiersdorf Nigeria Ltd, emphasized the company's commitment to safeguarding consumer health and brand integrity, while Juliu Itsisor discussed the company's investment in Nigeria and the establishment of a state-of-the-art facility.

The MoU includes provisions for cooperation in enforcement intelligence sharing, training, and public awareness to combat the proliferation of counterfeit materials in Nigeria.
