Urgent Action Needed on Delayed Calabar–Itu Road Project

Stakeholders in Cross River State are calling for immediate federal government intervention on the delayed Calabar–Itu road project, which is one of the oldest strategic transport corridors in Southern Nigeria, linking Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Abia States. Shop owner Bless Bassei highlighted the adverse effects of the slow construction pace on local businesses, stating that the condition of the road has led to significant economic losses.

Public affairs analyst Dr. Efio Ita Nyok criticized the federal administration for neglecting the road, asserting that the common man suffers due to the lack of political will to complete the project.

Akinola Alabi, the emerging chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, expressed dissatisfaction with the contractor's performance during an inspection tour. He announced plans for a public hearing to hold relevant stakeholders accountable for the delays.

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong also emphasized the urgency of the situation, referencing a past incident where a pregnant woman faced labor complications due to traffic along the route.
