Actor Michael Obeten Killed by Cannon at Rehearsal

Michael Obeten, an actor, tragically died due to a malfunctioning cannon that struck him during a rehearsal for a drama on Good Friday in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, Cross River State. The incident occurred on April 7, 2026, when the cannon, intended to simulate a thunder effect, malfunctioned and hit Obeten in the head, causing severe brain injuries.

He was rushed for medical treatment and scheduled for emergency surgery. The 2007 Mass Communication Alumni Group of the University of Cross River issued a statement expressing their sorrow and calling for stricter safety regulations at public events.

They described Obeten's death as tragic and avoidable, urging for a full investigation and prosecution of those responsible. The group also called for a ban on the use of firearms and cannons at public gatherings unless handled by licensed professionals.

Preliminary inquiries indicated that no official complaints had been lodged with the Yakurr divisional police regarding the incident.
