Curbing Accidents through Multimodal Investigation

The Nigerian transport industry has long been plagued by accidents across rail, maritime, and road subsectors, leading to casualties and safety concerns. However, the establishment of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) in 2022 has brought hope for improved safety measures.

NSIB now offers multimodal investigation services covering air, rail, maritime, and road transport, with the aim of reducing accidents and enhancing safety. Key stakeholders such as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) are fully cooperating with NSIB to ensure thorough investigations and implementation of safety recommendations.

NSIB's Director, Capt Alex Badeh Jnr, emphasized the importance of complying with international standards to boost stakeholder confidence and prevent accidents. The bureau has drafted regulations for maritime, railway, and civil aviation investigations, with plans for implementation in the near future.

NSIB aims to establish an integrated safety framework and collaborative investigation protocols across all modes of transportation to enhance safety standards.
