Customs Seizes 6,035 Cannabis Parcels in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service intercepted 6,035 parcels of cannabis, along with other smuggled goods, with a total duty-paid value of N3.57 billion, between June and August in Ogun. The acting Area Comptroller, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, announced these seizures during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Idiroko.

He stated that the command has intensified operations across the Ogun border corridors to protect local industries, safeguard national security, and make the routes hostile to smugglers and drug traffickers. The seized items included 2,339 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 70 cartons of basmati rice, 30 bags of foreign sugar, and various other goods.

Afeni condemned smuggling as “economic sabotage,” highlighting its detrimental effects on local industries and food security. He warned against consuming smuggled foreign rice, which may be stored under unhygienic conditions.

The 6,035 parcels of narcotics were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), with Afeni stressing the link between illicit drugs and violent crime.
