Nigeria Customs Seizes 1,996 Kegs of Vegetable Oil

On June 14, 2026, the Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of Comptroller Giwa Dauda, intercepted two 20-foot containers carrying 1,996 kegs of foreign-refined vegetable oil along the Odukpani-Calabar highway in Cross River State. The seized product, valued at N195.5 million, was part of ongoing efforts to protect local manufacturers and preserve jobs by intercepting prohibited imports.

The Customs Service emphasized that vegetable oil remains a product of significant investment by Nigerian manufacturers, and allowing foreign imports undermines local production capacity, discourages investment, and threatens thousands of jobs across the agricultural manufacturing value chain. The command also reported additional seizures, including 1,500 used tyres, 105 jumbo bales of second-hand clothing, and 800 liters of premium motor spirit, bringing the total value of prohibited items seized to N273.7 million.

The Customs Service warned smugglers against illegal import activities, stressing that such practices weaken local industries and distort market competition.
