Daily Petrol Demand Falls to 38.9m Litres as Lagos Dominates June Truckouts

In June, Nigeria's daily petrol demand fell to 38.9 million litres, with Lagos consuming a significant portion of this at roughly 17 million litres per day. This data, from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, revealed an uneven distribution of petrol consumption across the country.

Lagos led the way, followed by Ogun, the Federal Capital Territory, Oyo, Delta, and Kano. The top six states accounted for a large chunk of the petrol supply in June.

This decline in petrol consumption is attributed to the removal of petrol subsidies by the federal government in May 2023, leading to a rise in pump prices and a subsequent decrease in demand. Factors influencing the distribution pattern include population density, industrial clusters, and transport hubs in different states.
