NDPC Alerts Nigerians on Malicious Electronic Messages

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has cautioned Nigerians against malicious electronic messages that falsely assert recipients have violated traffic rules or related offenses. These messages aim to instill fear and urgency, leading individuals to click on links or disclose personal information.

The advisory, signed by Itunu Dosekun, Head of the Media Unit, was shared on the NDPC's X handle. The Commission noted that these malicious communications, previously limited to phishing emails, can now be disseminated through various electronic channels.

It urged the public to refrain from clicking on or following instructions from unverifiable messages, advising them to independently verify such communications by contacting the named organization through trusted means. The NDPC also recommended using strong, unique passwords, changing them if accounts are compromised, and enabling multi-factor authentication for added security.

The Commission emphasized that protecting personal data is a shared responsibility and advised against acting on messages that cannot be independently verified.
