Davido Defends Public Stance on Kidnappings After Rarara Backlash

Afrobeats musician Davido has pushed back against criticism from veteran Hausa singer Dauda Adamu Kahutu, professionally known as Rarara, over the artist's decision to highlight Nigeria's kidnapping crisis at an international event. The dispute arose after Davido performed at a FIFA World Cup 2026 countdown concert in Los Angeles on June 10, during which he wore a custom jacket displaying the names of abducted students and teachers from Oyo State.
Rarara released a video statement condemning Davido's actions, arguing that the public display of victim names on a global platform could damage Nigeria's international reputation and potentially promote the messaging of armed groups responsible for the abductions. Rarara's criticism centred on the idea that airing security problems before the world risks portraying the nation in an unfavourable light.
Davido responded by rejecting Rarara's framing, stating that remaining silent on Nigeria's kidnapping crisis is unacceptable. The musician argued that public figures have a responsibility to speak truthfully about national security challenges rather than prioritise political considerations or image management.
He contended that addressing the problem openly is an act of patriotism, not damage to the country. The sources differ slightly on the exact number of victims Davido referenced—one reports 39 students and seven teachers, while another states 40 schoolchildren and a teacher.
All three outlets confirm the abductions occurred in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15. The clash between Davido and Rarara reflects a broader disagreement within Nigeria over whether public acknowledgment of insecurity serves accountability or reinforces negative perceptions abroad.
