Delhi Hostel Collapse Traps Students, One Confirmed Dead

On Sunday, a five-storey building known as Hostel Daze collapsed in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of Delhi around 13:30 local time, trapping dozens of students beneath the rubble and resulting in at least one confirmed death, with two others in critical condition. Eyewitnesses indicated that approximately 50 students were present in the hostel at the time of the collapse.

By early reports, six individuals had been rescued. The building, which is estimated to be between 40 and 50 years old, was undergoing construction work in its basement, which may have contributed to the structural failure.

A local shopkeeper noted that while the upper structure was reinforced, the pillars below were weak. Delhi's Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, confirmed that an adjacent building was evacuated as a precaution.

The National Students' Union of India has demanded a government investigation into the incident, emphasizing that negligence regarding student safety will not be tolerated.
