Tinubu Launches Initiative to Cut Transport Costs in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced an immediate federal-state initiative to lower domestic transport costs by enhancing the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. This announcement followed a meeting with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on Thursday.

Tinubu stated that governors have resolved to implement measures to reduce transportation costs in their states, focusing on the benefits of CNG and electric vehicles. The Federal Government has converted over 120,000 vehicles under the Presidential CNG Initiative and is preparing an additional 100,000 conversion kits.

Tinubu highlighted ongoing investments under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, financing over 100 gas projects, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations. He directed the establishment of 1,000 CNG refuelling stations nationwide.

The president emphasized the importance of intra-state transport, where costs are most acutely felt by Nigerians, and welcomed the governors' commitment to act. A joint Federal and State implementation committee will be set up to coordinate these measures, with the goal of reducing transport fares starting October 1.
