Dickson Rejects Criticism as NDC Tensions Simmer Over Obi Alliance

The NDC leader has dismissed attacks on the party's direction while pushing back against suggestions he was sidelined in the 2027 presidential race.
Seriake Dickson, a prominent figure within the Nigerian Democratic Congress, has responded to mounting criticism of the party's leadership and its backing of Peter Obi's presidential bid ahead of the 2027 election. In recent media appearances, Dickson rejected claims that the NDC depends on Obi for survival or that he was wronged by the party's decision to support Obi and running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
He made clear that supporters of Obi cannot simultaneously attack the NDC's leadership structure while claiming allegiance to the party. Dickson stated he deliberately chose not to pursue the presidency himself, asserting that no one is doing the NDC a favour by remaining affiliated with it.
He also claimed he possesses stronger qualifications for Nigeria's highest office than both Obi and Kwankwaso, yet decided against running. According to Dickson, neither Obi nor Kwankwaso paid any financial fees to secure the NDC's presidential and vice-presidential tickets, and the party provided them with its political platform without imposing such demands.
The NDC leader stressed that the party plays a central role in the political process and maintains control over its structure, funding, and messaging. He disputed suggestions of internal party conflict surrounding his candidacy or role within the organization.
However, recent staffing changes—including the appointment of new media and communications personnel—have fueled speculation about leadership dynamics within the party. Separately, Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential aide, has predicted that Obi and Kwankwaso will eventually leave the NDC if their electoral expectations are not met by 2027.
Ahmad suggested the two politicians may seek alternative political platforms, noting that their immediate electoral calculations may not align with the NDC leadership's longer-term strategic vision for the party's development beyond the next general election.
