Maradona Death Retrial Begins with Medical Team Charged

The retrial regarding the death of Diego Maradona has begun, nearly four years after his passing due to heart failure on November 25, 2020. Seven members of Maradona's medical team are facing homicide charges, with the trial expected to run until July 2025.

The first trial collapsed in May 2025 when a judge allegedly allowed unauthorized filming of court proceedings. The accused, including Maradona's main medical advisor Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, and former nurse Dahiana Gisela Madrid, deny the allegations and could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years if convicted.

An investigation classified the case as culpable homicide, similar to involuntary manslaughter, with preliminary autopsy results confirming heart failure caused by acute pulmonary edema. A panel of medical experts appointed by the prosecutor concluded that the care provided at home was inadequate compared to proper medical facilities.

The trial will include testimonies from around 100 witnesses, including Maradona's daughter.
