Retrial for Diego Maradona's Death Begins in Argentina

The retrial regarding the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona began on Tuesday, with the first trial scheduled to conclude in May 2025. Maradona, who died at age 60 from heart failure, is at the center of a case involving allegations of unauthorized filming and a failure to provide adequate medical care by his medical team.

Seven individuals are being tried for homicide with possible intent, facing up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Investigations have classified the case as culpable homicide, akin to involuntary manslaughter, due to the serious health conditions Maradona faced prior to his death.

Preliminary autopsy results confirmed that Maradona suffered from acute pulmonary edema, which contributed to his heart failure. A panel of medical experts has requested prosecutors to investigate the treatment Maradona received at home, concluding that reckless deficiencies in care may have affected his chances of survival.
