Kwara Girls Trained in STEM to Bridge Digital Gender Gap

The Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) conducted a one-week training camp in Ilorin, Kwara, for 16 girls aged between 11 and 17, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to help bridge the digital gender gap. The program, titled “W.TEC She Creates Camp 2026,” aimed to enhance the girls' intelligence, confidence, and technology skills, encouraging them to view themselves as leaders in the creative space.

Mrs Kawthar Ibiyeye, the Programme Officer and State Coordinator, emphasized the need to engage girls in technology, noting their tendency to shy away from the field compared to boys. W.TEC Executive Director, Mrs Oreoluwa Lesi, stated that the program was designed to empower secondary school girls to leverage technology for future leadership.

Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, highlighted the initiative's alignment with the Kwara Government's vision for a knowledge-driven economy. Participants expressed their newfound interest in technology and career paths, with Fatimah Alege winning awards for her engagement.
