Dikko Sets 2030 World Cup Target After Chelle Renewal

Shehu Dikko, the chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has charged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to intensify efforts in rebuilding the national football team, aiming for qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This directive follows Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Super Eagles lost to DR Congo in a penalty shootout during the African playoff.

Dikko confirmed that Eric Chelle will continue as the head coach of the Super Eagles after successful contract negotiations, which include improved terms and performance targets. Dikko stressed the importance of focusing on long-term plans for success in the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the World Cup.

He noted that the Super Eagles finished third in the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, which provided encouragement despite the disappointment of missing the World Cup. Chelle has also been appointed to lead the U-23 team in preparation for the 2028 Olympic qualifiers.
