Kano Task Force Chair Rejects Political Pressure on Arrests

Muhuyi Rimin-Gado, the Chairman of the Kano State Inter-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, issued a warning to politicians on Tuesday, stating they should not attempt to influence the release of suspected thugs or drug offenders arrested by the task force. During a strategic meeting with media executives in Kano, Rimin-Gado asserted that the task force would operate independently and without political interference.

He noted that only the Governor, Abba Yusuf, could request the release of any individual, implying that such a request would lead to his resignation. The task force was established following a public health emergency declaration on substance abuse on July 22 and aims to combat drug trafficking, rehabilitate victims, and prosecute offenders.

Rimin-Gado highlighted that 70% of major crimes in Kano in 2025 were linked to drug abuse and emphasized the importance of parental supervision in preventing youth involvement in crime. The task force will also focus on dismantling violent gangs, with membership in such groups attracting a minimum five-year prison sentence.
