Nigerian Surgeon Performs Groundbreaking Fetal Surgery

Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian-born pediatric and fetal surgeon, was part of a multidisciplinary team at Texas Children’s Hospital that performed a remarkable surgery in 2016 on an unborn baby named Lynlee. At 23 weeks gestation, Lynlee was diagnosed with a massive tumor growing from the base of her spine, which threatened her heart and survival.

The medical team faced a dilemma: delivering her prematurely or operating while she was still in the womb. They chose the latter, performing a complex five-hour operation where Lynlee was partially delivered but remained attached to the placenta.

The team successfully removed approximately 90 percent of the tumor, allowing Lynlee to be returned safely to her mother’s womb, where the pregnancy continued for nearly three more months. This procedure became a defining moment in Olutoye's career and a source of pride for Nigerians, showcasing the capabilities of fetal medicine.
