Drug Abuse Linked to Violent Crimes in Kano State

Muhyi Magaji Rimingado, the chairman of the Taskforce Committee on Drug Abuse, stated that the prevalence of drug abuse is a significant factor contributing to violent crimes in Kano State. Speaking at a strategic meeting with newsmen in Kano on Tuesday, he highlighted that violent crimes, including thuggery, are closely linked to drug abuse.

Rimingado noted that Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf established the committee to address this issue following a statewide emergency declaration on substance abuse. The committee is tasked with combating drug trafficking and determining rehabilitation mechanisms for victims.

He reported that in 2024-2025, over 3,080 major crimes were recorded in the state, with 70 percent attributed to drug abuse, equating to approximately 2,700 crimes. Rimingado called for the support of parents and the media in the fight against drug abuse to reduce crime rates in the state.
