Buratai Defends Tinubu Against US Drug Allegations

Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), former Chief of Army Staff, has urged Nigerians to resist foreign interference in national matters, particularly in light of drug-trafficking allegations against President Bola Tinubu. Buratai's comments follow a United States District Court for the District of Columbia's decision, which allows the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice until August 28, 2026, to oppose the release of documents related to these allegations.

In a position paper titled “Nigeria First: A Case for Protecting National Sovereignty and Dignity,” Buratai emphasized that the controversy could tarnish Nigeria's image and affect the pride and prospects of its citizens. He argued that the allegations, dating back 33 years, should not define Tinubu's political career, highlighting that a foreign court should not determine the character of a Nigerian president elected by millions.

Buratai asserted that Nigerians have their own institutions to address leadership questions and should not rely on foreign entities for character assessments.
