NHRC Urges Respect for Rights of Drug Dependence Victims

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a warning to security agencies, rehabilitation centres, and other institutions against violating the rights of individuals affected by drug dependence. Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, stated that drug use does not strip individuals of their dignity, right to healthcare, or legal protection.

This declaration was made during a workshop held in Abuja from August 31 to September 1, organized in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Education as a Vaccine (EVA). Ojukwu, represented by Isioma Nwosa, the Commission’s Director of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, emphasized that individuals affected by drug dependence retain all fundamental rights under Nigerian law and international human rights instruments.

The NHRC is addressing complaints regarding denial of treatment, stigmatisation, and poor conditions in rehabilitation centres. The workshop aimed to equip NHRC officials with the necessary tools to handle complaints related to drug use and treatment effectively.
