NCDC Enhances Surveillance Amid Rising Meningitis Risk

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has intensified its surveillance efforts in response to the rising risk of meningitis outbreaks during the dry season, which typically peaks from December to April. Dr.

Jide Idri, the NCDC Director-General, issued a public health advisory on Friday in Abuja, highlighting that meningitis outbreaks are common in Africa's meningitis belt, particularly during dry, dusty conditions that increase disease transmission. The NCDC reported 4,915 suspected cases and 361 deaths across 24 states during the 2023-2024 meningitis season.

Dr. Idri emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics to improve survival chances and reduce complications.

He cautioned that symptoms such as sudden high fever, severe headache, and neck stiffness should not be automatically attributed to malaria. The NCDC encourages Nigerians to avoid overcrowded spaces, improve ventilation, and participate in vaccination campaigns when announced.
