DSS Calls for Stronger Support in Cybercrime Prosecutions

On Thursday, October 12, 2023, DSS Director General Oluwatosin Ajayi urged for enhanced public and judicial support in prosecuting cybercrime cases to deter offenders. Speaking in Abuja during the presentation of the second edition of the compendium on electronic evidence (2020-2025), Ajayi stressed that holding offenders accountable is crucial for societal change.

He noted that the prosecution of cybercrime cases, including online attacks against public officials, is vital, although he refrained from commenting on specific cases pending in court. Ajayi called on legal practitioners and stakeholders to support these prosecutions, including filing amicus curiae briefs when necessary.

Retired Justice Alaba Omolay Ajiley, who assisted in the presentation, emphasized the importance of electronic evidence in the legal system, while other legal figures, including Lateef Fagbemi and Ola Olukoyede, acknowledged the challenges posed by internet fraud to Nigeria's economy and the need for legislative support to combat these crimes effectively.
