Kenneth Okonkwo Critiques Manual Election Transmission

Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), expressed strong opposition to the recent legislative move allowing manual transmission of election results when electronic transmission fails. In an interview, he argued that this provision could lead to manipulation and rigging, thereby weakening public confidence in the electoral process.

Okonkwo insisted on the necessity of unconditional electronic upload of results from polling units to maintain the integrity of elections. He highlighted past failures of manual processes and the importance of technology in ensuring accurate results.

Okonkwo referenced the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its use of technology, noting that issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) should not justify a return to manual methods. He warned that allowing manual intervention could result in fraudulent activities and called for a commitment to electronic transmission to safeguard the electoral process.
