Allegations of Violence in Ebonyi Ahead of 2027 Elections

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, allegations of attacks, intimidation, and harassment targeting opposition members and journalists in Ebonyi State have emerged, raising concerns about the safety of political actors and the electoral process. Incidents reported in Ezza South Local Government Area between August 1 and 6, 2026, included the disruption of a defection rally for Ifeanyi Nworie, a former member of the All Progressives Congress who was returning to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Nworie alleged that over 50 political thugs, suspected to be APC supporters, attacked the rally, destroying property and assaulting attendees. He claimed that the Ebonyi State Police Command failed to provide adequate security despite being notified of the event.

The opposition and the Nigeria Union of Journalists condemned these incidents, calling for investigations and accountability. The APC denied involvement, while stakeholders expressed concerns that such violence could undermine democratic participation in the upcoming elections.
