Ebonyi State Governor Nwifuru Approves Female Football Team

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has approved the establishment of a female football team as part of his administration's commitment to enhancing sports development and providing more opportunities for young athletes in the state. This announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Chidi Onyia, during a visit by the executive members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ebonyi State Chapter, to his office in Abakaliki.

Onyia noted that this approval reflects Governor Nwifuru's determination to revive sports in Ebonyi, particularly following the achievements of Ebonyi-born athlete Gabriel Ogazi, who recently won gold in the men’s 400 metres and is currently ranked number one globally. Additionally, the governor has approved stipends for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, ending over a decade without such support.

Onyia urged Abakaliki FC to secure promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and encouraged sports journalists to promote sports through balanced reporting and support grassroots talent development.
