ECN Launches 1MW Solar Hybrid Project at Bayero University

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), represented by Director Mustapha Abdullahi, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a 1 megawatt (MW) solar hybrid power system at Bayero University in Kano. This project is the first of its kind and is designed to enhance electricity supply while promoting sustainable energy solutions within the university community.

The system incorporates advanced solar technology capable of generating electricity even in shaded or dusty conditions. It features a smart monitoring system that allows operators to monitor electrical loads via mobile phones and laptops.

The installation includes interconnected inverters and battery components arranged in a centralized format for easier operation and maintenance. An energy audit conducted earlier determined the university's power needs, which serves a population of 40,000.

The 1MW project is the first phase, with plans to expand capacity to 4-5 MW. The federal government, under President Bola Tinubu's administration, is committed to delivering affordable and reliable solar power across Nigeria.
