EHCON Launches GHG Emissions Reduction Initiative

On Wednesday, the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) launched a GHG Emissions Reduction Initiative in Abuja, aimed at enhancing air quality and public health. Dr.

Yakubu Moh Baba, the Registrar and CEO of EHCON, disclosed that the initiative is designed to combat the troubling rise in diseases associated with air pollution, including respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. He highlighted that the initiative is essential for ensuring cleaner air, which is crucial for health, economic growth, and sustainability.

The program focuses on interventions such as the use of oxytan fuel additives, which can demonstrate a capacity to reduce carbon emissions by 70% and fossil fuel consumption by approximately 30%. Dr.

Baba explained that the initiative aims to bring cleaner urban air, reduce the disease burden, lower healthcare costs, and improve environmental sustainability. It aligns with Nigeria's commitments to global sustainable development goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
