Ekiti State Invests Over N1bn in Flood Control Measures

The Ekiti State government has allocated over N1 billion for flood control and mitigation measures to protect lives and property from flooding, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). Mr. Olukayode Adunmo, General Manager of the Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency, announced this in Ado Ekiti, stating that the comprehensive flood mitigation program commenced in 2023, prior to NiMet's latest predictions.

The government has spent N1.18 billion from 2023 to 2026 on dredging waterways, desilting drainages and culverts, and maintaining hydraulic infrastructure. Adunmo praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his proactive approach, emphasizing that the government initiated preventive measures without waiting for annual flood predictions.

Dredging interventions have been approved for eight local government areas, including Ado-Ekiti and Ikere-Ekiti, which are particularly vulnerable to flooding. Desilting operations have also been conducted in several areas, including Moba and Irepodun/Ifelodun.
