Equatorial Guinea Official Jailed for Embezzlement in High-Profile Case

Equatorial Guinea has sentenced senior government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison for embezzlement. Engonga was found guilty of diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars meant for travel expenses for personal use.

The court also imposed a fine on him. Engonga, a former head of the national financial investigation agency, was prosecuted alongside five other officials implicated in the scheme.

The case gained global attention last November when a leaked sex tape involving Engonga's wife surfaced. The scandal led to online parodies and jokes.

The court's ruling confirmed Engonga's involvement in the embezzlement scandal, which has tarnished his reputation.
