EU Allocates €500,000 for Minamata Convention Initiatives

The European Union has provided over €500,000 to advance the mandates established during the 6th Conference of the Parties (COP6) under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. This funding will facilitate the implementation of set targets and activities outlined in the COP6 program for the years 2026 and 2027.

The COP6 took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 3 to 7, 2025, where Osvaldo Alvarez from Chile was elected as the President of COP6. The upcoming COP7 is scheduled for Geneva, Switzerland, from September 6 to 10, 2027, which will mark the 10th anniversary of the Minamata Convention's entry into force.

The financial support from the EU will assist the Secretariat in promoting ratification and strengthening the effective implementation of the Convention's objectives, which focus on protecting human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury.
