Experts Urge $22 Billion Investment in Nigeria's Gas Pipelines
Energy experts have called for the expansion and modernization of Nigeria’s pipeline network to unlock the country's significant gas resources, improve industrial supply, and mitigate environmental and operational risks. This discussion occurred during the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service B2B Matchmaking Programme at the 2026 International Pipeline Conference and Expo in Calgary, Canada.
Dr. Eloho Amagada, CEO of Amelin Projects Ltd and a board member of the Pipeline Professionals Association of Nigeria (PLAN), noted that Nigeria has proven gas reserves of approximately 215.19 trillion cubic feet (TCF) but lacks sufficient infrastructure. He estimated that expanding the pipeline network could require about $22 billion in investment.
Amagada emphasized that stronger infrastructure would support various industries, including power generation and manufacturing. He also warned about the integrity risks posed by aging pipelines, citing over 3,000 defects found in a recent inspection of a 55-kilometre pipeline.
He advocated for proactive maintenance and the use of digital monitoring technologies. Government gas development plans project production of about 10 billion cubic feet daily by 2027 and 12 billion cubic feet daily by 2030.
