Adeyemi's Rights Suit Faces Setback in Abuja Court

Adeniyi Adeyemi, the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), filed a fundamental rights suit against the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and an Assistant Inspector-General of Police. The Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the case to be returned to the registry for reassignment after identifying a procedural defect in the proof of service related to the hearing notice.

Adeyemi, currently in police custody, is seeking his release or bail, access to medical treatment, protection from being questioned without his lawyer, and unrestricted access to his legal representatives. Justice Obiora Egwuatu had previously declined to grant bail and medical treatment requests, stating that the police should respond first.

The court had initially scheduled proceedings for September 9, but they were postponed due to improper service. Adeyemi's lawyer, Muhammad Abdulazeez, confirmed that the respondents were served, but the judge noted the defect in the service document, leading to the adjournment.
