Uba Sani Honors Gani Fawehinmi's Legacy in Politics

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani acknowledged the significant contributions of the late human rights lawyer and pro-democracy activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, in preserving Nigeria's political space for opposition parties. Speaking at the book presentation titled "Gani Fawehinmi and Uba Sani: A Tale of Mentor and Mentee," Sani recounted Fawehinmi's leadership in challenging the stringent registration conditions imposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This legal battle, which lasted over two years, culminated in a ruling by Justice Dahiru Mustapha in 2002, followed by a Supreme Court ruling in January 2003 that favored Fawehinmi and his allies. Sani emphasized that this victory opened the political landscape in Nigeria, allowing for the emergence of more political parties.

He urged recognition of the sacrifices made by activists like Fawehinmi for the democratic freedoms enjoyed today and highlighted Fawehinmi's commitment to education through the Gani Fawehinmi Scholarship Foundation.
