Fayemi Urges Catholics to Engage in Politics for 2027

On 13 September 2026, Kayode Fayemi, the former Governor of Ekiti State, addressed the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at Our Lady and St. Kizito Pastoral Centre in Oke-Gada, Ede, Osun State. He urged Nigerian Catholics to increase their political involvement, warning that abstaining from public affairs could allow unprincipled individuals to dominate governance.

Speaking on the theme ‘Faith in Action: Empowering the Catholic Laity for Active Political Participation Ahead of the 2027 General Elections,’ Fayemi emphasized that Christians should not be deterred by the perception of politics as corrupt. He advocated for active participation beyond voting, including contesting for positions, joining political parties, and monitoring elections.

Fayemi cautioned against letting ethnic, religious, or financial interests influence electoral decisions, urging voters to evaluate candidates based on human dignity, justice, and the common good. He called for enhanced political education within the Catholic Church to equip members for effective public service.
