Bishop Oyejola Urges Accountability in Nigerian Politics

During the 2nd Catholic Bishops’ Conference Of Nigeria (CBCN) plenary meeting held at the St. Benedict Catholic Cathedral in Osogbo, Bishop Oyejola addressed Nigerian politicians, warning them that while they may manipulate elections, they cannot deceive God. The meeting, themed “Prophetic Call for Accountable Governance and Moral Citizenship in Nigeria,” focused on the moral and political challenges facing the nation.

Oyejola referenced readings from Sirach, Romans, and Matthew, which he stated reflect the current political climate, highlighting issues such as resentment, impunity, vote-selling, and neglect of the poor. He emphasized that accountability is a spiritual obligation and warned that power gained through unethical means becomes a curse.

Oyejola described voting as a moral act that impacts future generations and urged leaders to protect citizens and ensure justice. Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, representing The Pope Leo XIV in Nigeria, also spoke, stressing the need for citizen engagement in the democratic process and the importance of making votes count.
