Fela Anikulapo Kuti Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, marking him as the first Nigerian-born artist to receive this honor. This recognition places him in the "Early Influences" category, which celebrates artists whose work has significantly shaped popular music.

Fela, born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1938, is renowned for fusing jazz, funk, and traditional Yoruba music to create the Afrobeat movement. His performances at the Afrika Shrine in Lagos became a sanctuary for free thought and resistance against Nigeria's military rule, where he faced numerous arrests and government raids, including a notorious incident in 1977.

Fela passed away in 1997, but his influence continues to resonate, inspiring contemporary artists like Burna Boy. The 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will also honor other influential artists such as Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, and Wu-Tang Clan.
