First Niger Bridge to Close for Repairs from Sept 7

The Federal Ministry of Works, Anambra State Field Headquarters, has announced the closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha for two weeks, beginning September 7, 2026, to facilitate emergency repairs. This decision follows a visit by the Minister of Works, Engr Dave Umahi, who inspected damage caused by vandalism, including the theft of bolts and iron rods.

The announcement, signed by State Controller Mr Timothy Emenike, emphasized the deteriorated condition of the bridge, particularly the carriageway surface and components affected by vandalization. The contractor, Messrs SKECC, has been directed to commence maintenance works, which include milling and removal of the existing asphalt surfacing, laying a new asphalt wearing course, and installing solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras.

The maintenance works are expected to be completed by September 21, 2026. Motorists are advised to use the Second Niger Bridge route during the closure and to adhere to traffic diversion measures for safety.
