Nigeria's Government Unveils Major Port Upgrades and Developments

The Federal Government has approved the modernization and upgrade of four ports outside Lagos and the development of six new deep seaports in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Bayelsa, Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers states. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced this in a statement on his official X account.

The four ports being upgraded are Onne and Rivers ports in Rivers State, Delta Port in Delta State, and Calabar Port in Cross River State. The six new deep seaports include Ibom, Bakassi, Agge, Gateway, Ondo, and Bonny.

Oyetola stated that this initiative builds on previous upgrades of Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos, aiming to reduce cargo traffic concentration in the Lagos area. The government seeks to create an integrated maritime and logistics system to facilitate cargo movement, reduce business costs, and encourage investment.

This plan is part of a broader strategy to position Nigeria as a major maritime hub in Africa.
